WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – Next week, the U.S. Treasury Department plans to offer a total of $119 billion through three separate sales of notes and bonds. The schedule begins on Tuesday, Oct. 6, with a $58 billion auction of three-year notes. On Wednesday, Treasury will conduct a $39 billion auction of 10-year notes, followed by a $22 billion sale of 30-year bonds on Thursday. These auctions are part of the government’s routine financing operations, aligning with the amounts forecasted in Treasury’s latest quarterly refunding schedule for October.

The three-year security being auctioned is a newly issued note scheduled to mature on Oct. 15, 2029. The 10-year auction will involve the reopening of a 4.625% note that matures on Aug. 15, 2036. Similarly, the 30-year bond will be a reopening of a 5.125% security due on Aug. 15, 2056. Reopening securities increases supply in the market while keeping their original coupon rate and maturity date intact, with the only change being the issue date for these additional securities.
All three securities are set to settle on Oct. 15, according to the auction calendar published by the U.S. Treasury Department. The sales are conducted on a yield basis, with results released after each auction concludes. Competitive bidders specify the yield they are willing to accept, while noncompetitive bidders agree to the yield determined at auction. Treasury notes and bonds offer fixed interest payments at regular intervals and constitute a significant portion of the U.S. government’s marketable debt.
Treasury schedules a three-day auction series
Following sales of the same securities in September, the October reopenings of the 10-year and 30-year notes will take place. On Sept. 9, Treasury sold $39 billion of the 10-year note with a high yield of 4.834%. Investors submitted bids totaling approximately $105.8 billion, resulting in a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.71. This note has a 4.625% coupon and matures in August 2036. The upcoming October auction will add another $39 billion of this same security to the market.
On Sept. 10, Treasury sold $22 billion of the 30-year bond at a high yield of 5.308%. The auction drew about $57.5 billion in bids, leading to a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.61. This bond features a 5.125% coupon and matures in August 2056. The October sale will reopen this security with an additional $22 billion. After Thursday’s auction, Treasury will reveal the accepted yield, price, and bidding details.
October auctions align with broader borrowing plans
The scheduled October sales occur amid a quarter in which Treasury projected considerable marketable borrowing. In August, the department estimated a total of $628 billion of net marketable borrowing for the period from October through December. This estimate factors in an assumed end-of-December cash balance of $850 billion. The government funds its operations through regular sales of bills, notes, bonds, and other marketable securities, with auction sizes varying depending on the maturity and the official financing schedule published by Treasury.
The $119 billion total for October maintains the same auction sizes outlined in Treasury’s August financing plan: $58 billion for three-year notes, $39 billion for 10-year notes, and $22 billion for 30-year bonds. Official auction results will be published on each sale day, including details such as the high yield, accepted bids, allocations, and pricing for the securities issued during next week’s schedule.
