Travel Advisory for Belgium Maintains Level 2 Status According to US Officials

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The U.S. State Department has kept Belgium at Level 2 in its latest travel advisory, citing ongoing concerns related to crime, terrorism, and civil unrest. The update, issued on July 23, emphasizes the importance of exercising increased caution without elevating the overall risk level. While crime and unrest have been added as specific hazards, the advisory level remains unchanged. This guidance is applicable to American travelers visiting Brussels, other Belgian cities, and key tourist destinations throughout the nation.

US keeps Belgium at Level 2 in updated travel advisory
Belgium travelers should stay alert in tourist areas and transport hubs.

The updated notice emphasizes heightened vigilance regarding theft, especially in crowded areas, and transport systems. Pickpockets are known to operate near railway stations, metro platforms, restaurants, airports, and popular tourist districts. Visitors are also at risk of purse snatching, mobile phone theft, and theft from parked vehicles. The advisory advises keeping passports, cash, and electronic devices secure while navigating public spaces and recommends avoiding leaving luggage or valuables unattended.

Special attention is given to train travel since thieves often target bags stored above seats or near train exits. Reports of theft have been noted on routes connecting Brussels and Amsterdam. Criminal groups may work in teams and employ distractions to steal wallets, phones, or small luggage items. Belgian Federal Police suggest passengers keep important belongings close and stay vigilant during station stops. Caution is advised when boarding, alighting, or moving through crowded stations.

Focus on transportation hubs and tourist hotspots

The terrorism section highlights the need for caution at public gatherings, hotels, restaurants, shopping districts, and places of worship. The updated guidance also covers schools, parks, transportation networks, and major events. Belgium’s national threat assessment continues to be rated at Level 3 on a four-tier scale. Officials characterize this level as indicating a serious threat, used when threats are considered possible and likely. Visitors are advised to follow security instructions and stay aware of their surroundings.

Protests and strikes can disrupt mobility within Belgian cities, causing road blockages, train delays, or interruptions to local transit. Authorities may restrict access around demonstration sites and reroute traffic unexpectedly. The advisory urges travelers to avoid demonstrations, stay updated on local developments, and check transportation status during large events or labor actions.

Importance of emergency contacts and preparation for trips

Travelers are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) before or during their visit. STEP provides security alerts and assists the U.S. Embassy in Brussels in reaching citizens during emergencies. It is also recommended to review entry requirements, local laws, and health advisories before departure. Carrying copies of passports and other travel documents can facilitate quicker assistance if items are lost or stolen. Trusted contacts or family members should also be provided with a copy of the itinerary.

In case of emergencies, Belgium’s emergency number is 112 for police, fire, and medical services, while the local police can be reached at 101. Visitors should exercise caution around ticket machines, banks, and ATMs, especially in crowded areas. The current Belgium travel advisory does not suggest avoiding the country but emphasizes careful preparation, personal security, and compliance with official guidance. The Level 2 alert remains in effect as the busy summer travel season continues.
