Dollar Index Retreats 0.25% from 18-Month Peak

    October 16, 2026
Facebook WhatsApp Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Telegram Tumblr Email Reddit VKontakte

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – On Tuesday, October 13, the U.S. Dollar Index declined by 0.25%, settling at 102.27 and retreating from its highest point in 18 months. The index, which measures the greenback against six major currencies, had previously risen to 102.61 on Monday, marking its peak since April 2025. The decline was influenced by falling oil prices and a reassessment of the rally driven by artificial intelligence. Investors remained cautious, awaiting new cues on the direction of US interest rates.

During Tuesday’s trading session, crude oil prices fell 0.86%, ending at $105.75 per barrel. Market participants evaluated the potential for additional Russian diesel exports entering the market. Moscow indicated it might resume diesel shipments exceeding the levels established by US President Donald Trump in a deal with Russia. Additionally, traders anticipate that Trump will avoid escalating tensions in the Middle East before the upcoming midterm elections next month. Last week, Trump stated that the US would not attack Iran before the vote and mentioned a ceasefire on energy between Russia and Ukraine on Sunday.

The high cost of oil had recently supported the dollar against the euro and the yen, both of which are linked to economies that depend more heavily on imported oil than the US. According to BNY strategist John Velis, the slight dip in oil prices contributed to a weaker dollar. He also noted that earnings from major banks showed mixed results, while bond yields traded just below recent highs. Earlier in October, the dollar hit a 17-month high following a surge in Treasury yields.

Euro Rebounds from May’s Lowest Point

The euro appreciated by 0.3% to $1.1189 on Tuesday, recovering from the previous day’s low of $1.11525, which was its weakest since May 2025. The rise occurred despite gas prices, a key inflation driver in the eurozone, climbing again. Concerns about France’s fiscal stability persisted. Against the Japanese yen, the euro increased by 0.21% to 177.32 yen, while the yen itself strengthened by 0.15% to 158.38 per dollar.

The Australian dollar was quoted at $0.6979 after the Reserve Bank of Australia released minutes from its latest meeting. The document confirmed unanimous support among board members for a fourth interest rate hike this year. The move in September raised the official cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.60%. Analysts also pointed to growing skepticism regarding the AI-driven investment narrative boosting US asset demand. Corpay chief market strategist Karl Schamotta stated that the US exceptionalism trade had become overly extended and was susceptible to a technical correction.

Federal Reserve Rate Outlook Influences Next Dollar Movement

Market participants are now focusing on the upcoming September Consumer Price Index report, due Wednesday, to gauge potential further tightening by the Federal Reserve. The CME Group’s FedWatch Tool indicated roughly an 80% chance that interest rates will remain unchanged at the October 27-28 meeting, a notable increase from 51% a month earlier. The market also prices in approximately 75 basis points of additional hikes by late 2027. The Fed implemented a rate increase in September. Fed Governor Christopher Waller commented that inflation expectations remain firmly anchored.

Inflation data released on Wednesday surpassed expectations, pushing the dollar index to an 18-month high. However, the greenback retreated on Thursday, October 15, falling 0.44% to 102.00. On the same day, the euro recovered to $1.1210. Officials including Michelle Bowman and Mary Daly indicated that the Fed might hold off on further moves until more clarity is available. Market attention now shifts to remarks from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh at the IMF-World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok on Friday.
