U.S. National Debt Surpasses $40 Trillion Amid Growing Fiscal Challenges

    August 31, 2026
Facebook WhatsApp Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Telegram Tumblr Email Reddit VKontakte

WASHINGTON, D.C. / RankWire.AI / – The total gross national debt of the United States has exceeded $40 trillion for the first time in history, marking a significant fiscal milestone. According to U.S. Treasury’s Debt to the Penny data, the debt was recorded at $40.047 trillion on August 18. By August 27, this figure had risen slightly to approximately $40.078 trillion. Of this amount, around $32.314 trillion was held by outside investors and institutions, while the federal government accounts managed roughly $7.764 trillion.

U.S. debt tops $40 trillion as fiscal pressures deepen
U.S. national debt tops $40 trillion as federal borrowing and interest costs rise.

Reaching the $40 trillion threshold came less than five months after the gross federal debt hit $39 trillion in March. A decade earlier, in August 2016, the total debt stood near $19.5 trillion. The growth in federal debt occurs when government expenditures surpass income, prompting Washington to borrow to bridge the gap. Large deficits during the pandemic led to unprecedented borrowing, and annual budget shortfalls persisted even after emergency programs concluded. Most of this debt is financed through the issuance of Treasury securities.

In the first ten months of fiscal 2026, the Congressional Budget Office reported a federal budget deficit of $1.8 trillion. This is an increase of $169 billion compared to the same period last year. Federal revenues grew by $139 billion, or 3%, while expenditures jumped by $308 billion, or 5%. The CBO now projects a $2.1 trillion deficit for fiscal 2026, up from its earlier estimate of $1.9 trillion made in February.

Interest Payments Climb as Debt Mounts

As the debt rises and borrowing costs increase, interest payments have become a significant portion of federal spending. Current estimates forecast net federal interest expenses to surpass $1 trillion in fiscal 2026, up from $970 billion in 2025. This equates to roughly 3.3% of the gross domestic product. Under existing projections, net interest costs are expected to reach $2.1 trillion by 2036, or 4.6% of GDP. At this level, interest expenses nearly match all projected discretionary federal spending.

Publicly held debt is also approaching historic highs relative to the economy’s size. The projections place this debt at 101% of GDP in 2026 and 120% by 2036. The previous record was 106% in 1946, shortly after World War II. The baseline scenario estimates publicly held debt to be near $56 trillion by 2036, with gross federal debt close to $64 trillion. The current statutory federal debt limit is set at $41.1 trillion.

Growing Debt Has Broader Economic Impacts

Federal borrowing influences financial conditions beyond the government’s own budget. Analysts have found that increased government borrowing competes with private borrowers for available savings, ultimately raising borrowing costs over time. This dynamic can dampen private investment and slow economic growth compared to a lower-debt scenario. Reduced investment also results in less productive capital for workers, negatively affecting productivity and wages. These interconnected effects link federal debt levels with credit markets, business investment, and household incomes across the broader economy.

While gross national debt and the federal deficit are related, they measure different financial aspects of government finance. Gross debt reflects the total accumulated federal obligations, including publicly held debt and securities held by government accounts. The deficit indicates the yearly difference between government spending and revenue. Both figures remain high in 2026, with gross debt exceeding $40 trillion and the annual deficit estimated at $2.1 trillion. This year’s federal deficits constitute about 5.8% of GDP, compared to a fifty-year average of 3.8%.
