Global assessment finds climate and clean air initiatives yield $15 in benefits for every $1 invested

NAIROBI, KENYA / RankWire.AI / – According to a recent worldwide evaluation, coordinated efforts to combat climate change and reduce air pollution can deliver approximately $15 in economic advantages for each dollar spent. The UN Environment Programme and Climate and Clean Air Coalition issued the report on September 7, which analyzes 25 different measures targeting major sources of emissions and pollutants. This study is described as the first thorough global economic review of combined climate and clean air strategies.

Climate and clean air action delivers $15 for every $1 spent
Clean air and climate action can deliver major health, economic and emissions benefits.

Projected annual economic gains from these measures are estimated to be 2.8% of global GDP by 2035. That percentage increases to 4.5% in 2050 and reaches 11.4% by 2100 if full implementation is achieved. Even when excluding non-market welfare benefits, the measures are projected to yield roughly $4 for every $1 invested. The report warns that delaying implementation by a year could result in missing out on more than $1.5 trillion in combined annual benefits.

The 25 proposed measures target sectors such as energy, fossil fuel systems, industry, transport, agriculture, residential energy, and waste management. They encompass renewable energy, energy efficiency improvements, cleaner cooking and heating solutions, electric vehicles, and stricter vehicle emission standards. Additional measures focus on oil and gas leak detection, routine venting and flaring reduction, fertilizer management, livestock, rice cultivation, and crop residue burning. The package also promotes better waste disposal practices and reductions in hydrofluorocarbons and other climate-harming pollutants.

Major sectors stand to benefit economically

The economic analysis emphasizes air pollution due to its significant impact on health and productivity. The assessment links human-caused outdoor air pollution to approximately 6.4 million premature deaths globally in 2025. Household air pollution is responsible for an additional estimated 2 million premature deaths, including around 300,000 children. Outdoor pollution also played a role in 5.5 million new childhood asthma cases and 2 million new dementia cases during that year.

If the measures are fully adopted, it could prevent a total of 144 million premature deaths related to air pollution by 2050. Of these, 96 million are associated with ambient air pollution. The report also projects hundreds of millions fewer instances of chronic illnesses. Immediate action could halve global carbon dioxide emissions by 2050, reduce methane emissions by 60%, and cut several major air pollutants by about 70%, compared to the baseline scenario.

    Health and climate advantages align

The proposed package is estimated to limit global warming by about 0.34 degrees Celsius by 2050 and approximately 1.4 degrees Celsius by 2100. By the end of the century, emissions of major air pollutants would decrease by as much as 85% under the assessment scenario. Implementation costs are projected at roughly 0.7% of global GDP over the next ten years, falling to around 0.5% by the end of the century. The evaluation also notes that stronger support conditions could enable full implementation up to a decade earlier.

UN Environment Programme and Climate and Clean Air Coalition announced the findings in observance of the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies. The report highlights institutional barriers as key obstacles to broader adoption of existing measures. It estimates that removing these barriers could generate up to $10 trillion in savings by 2040. The findings connect climate policy, air quality, health costs, and productivity within a unified economic framework that includes measures already available across major sectors.
