STARBASE, TEXAS / RankWire.AI / – SpaceX experienced a decline of 13.6% in its stock price on August 5, closing at $108.27. The decline followed the company’s inaugural quarterly report since its initial public offering in June. Investors faced a balancing act between robust revenue expansion and a hefty $18.37 billion in capital expenditure for the quarter. Notably, spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure soared to $15.83 billion from $749 million a year prior.

During trading, the stock dipped as low as $107.18 and ended the session nearly 20% below its IPO price of $135. SpaceX issued 638.9 million Class A shares through the offering, including the full underwriters’ option, which netted the company approximately $85.68 billion. Trading commenced on Nasdaq on June 12, with the shares reaching a peak of $201.80 later on.
The company’s second-quarter revenue reached $7.81 billion, marking a 92% increase from $4.07 billion a year earlier. Its net loss was reduced to $541 million from roughly $1.01 billion. Operating losses also improved, decreasing to $143 million from $970 million in the same period. Adjusted EBITDA totaled $3.54 billion.
Growth in AI expenses accelerates
Revenue generated by the artificial intelligence division hit $2.56 billion for the quarter, representing a 247.5% increase from $737 million. The rise was primarily driven by new AI services and infrastructure, which contributed $1.88 billion. Meanwhile, advertising income saw a decline of $59 million during the same period. The division posted an operating loss of $1.26 billion, with research and development costs climbing 94.1% to $2.18 billion.
Starlink along with other connectivity offerings continued to be SpaceX’s primary revenue source. Sales in connectivity rose by 65.8% to $4.29 billion, with operating income increasing by 79.4% to $1.66 billion. Subscriber growth among consumers was 101.2%, although average revenue per user declined by 22.4%. Revenue gains from government, aviation, maritime, and enterprise sectors added another $939 million.
Major share unlocks post-IPO commence
Starting August 6, up to 911.5 million employee and early investor shares become eligible for sale. This amount represents approximately 6.9% of SpaceX’s total 13.18 billion Class A and Class B shares outstanding. It surpasses the number sold during the IPO by around 272.6 million. The company detailed its release schedule in the prospectus filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
As of the August 5 closing price, the initial unlocked block carried an approximate notional value of $98.7 billion. As of July 28, SpaceX reported having 7.70 billion Class A shares and 5.49 billion Class B shares in circulation. By the end of June, the company held $93.52 billion in cash and $6.49 billion in marketable securities. The session on August 6 will be the first day eligible holders can sell shares from the initial restricted group.
