Trump administration expands tech force to hire 1000 ai specialists

WASHINGTON, December 17, 2025: The Trump administration has announced a major federal hiring initiative known as the “U.S. Tech Force,” aiming to recruit approximately 1,000 technology specialists to modernize government systems and advance artificial intelligence capabilities across federal agencies. The program, introduced by the White House this week, marks one of the largest short-term technology recruitment efforts in U.S. government history. The U.S. Tech Force will focus on bringing experienced engineers, data scientists, cybersecurity experts, and software developers into government service for two-year appointments. These specialists will work on critical projects spanning artificial intelligence, data modernization, digital infrastructure, and cybersecurity.

Trump administration launches nationwide hiring for AI and cybersecurity experts.

The initiative is intended to strengthen the federal government’s technical capacity following significant workforce reductions earlier this year across multiple departments. According to administration officials, Tech Force participants will receive competitive compensation aligned with private-sector benchmarks, with annual salaries ranging from about $130,000 to $195,000 depending on their expertise and the agency placement. Positions will be distributed across a range of departments, including the Departments of Treasury, Defense, Energy, Health and Human Services, and Homeland Security. Each agency will assign teams to focus on modernization projects tailored to their operational needs, including digital payments infrastructure, data management, and network security.

The new program is modeled on earlier federal technology modernization efforts, such as the U.S. Digital Service and 18F, but represents a broader national campaign to attract top-tier private-sector talent. The White House confirmed that several leading technology companies, including Meta, Microsoft, Google, Apple, OpenAI, and Nvidia, have expressed support for the initiative. These firms are expected to offer mentorship, technical workshops, and optional career pathways for participants completing their government terms. Tech Force recruits will undergo a federal onboarding process before being assigned to specific projects. Among the targeted areas are automation of government data systems, development of secure digital platforms for interagency communication, and integration of artificial intelligence tools into federal operations.

Federal initiative prioritizes artificial intelligence expertise

A portion of the specialists will also contribute to financial and regulatory technology initiatives under the Department of the Treasury, aimed at improving digital financial systems and data-driven oversight. The administration described the Tech Force as a key element of its ongoing effort to modernize federal technology and reinforce national competitiveness in artificial intelligence. The program aligns with recent executive directives focused on AI adoption, federal cybersecurity resilience, and public-sector efficiency. In announcing the initiative, officials emphasized the importance of collaboration between government and industry to ensure that emerging technologies are safely and effectively deployed in public services. The hiring campaign follows a period of major restructuring in federal technology offices earlier in 2025. Several previous digital service units were dissolved or merged, and thousands of tech-related federal positions were eliminated as part of cost-cutting and reorganization measures.

The new recruitment drive is viewed as a step toward restoring technical expertise across agencies and filling critical gaps in digital infrastructure management. Applications for Tech Force positions will open through USAJobs.gov in January 2026, with the first group of specialists expected to begin federal service by midyear. Candidates will be evaluated based on technical proficiency, experience in large-scale system design, and ability to deliver results within accelerated project timelines. The initiative will operate under the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, in coordination with the Office of Science and Technology Policy and the General Services Administration. Each appointment will last approximately two years, with potential for extension based on project outcomes and agency needs. Upon completion, participants will have the opportunity to transition back to the private sector or pursue long-term federal positions.

Treasury and Defense to receive new AI and data specialists

The administration stated that the goal is to create a pipeline of high-impact technologists capable of addressing federal digital challenges efficiently and securely. The White House said the U.S. Tech Force represents an investment in national capacity to harness advanced technologies for public benefit. By integrating artificial intelligence, modern cybersecurity standards, and data-driven systems across federal agencies, officials expect to improve service delivery, transparency, and operational efficiency. Recruitment and placement efforts are expected to continue through late 2026 as part of the first operational phase. The initiative is also designed to strengthen collaboration between government, academia, and industry by creating an exchange of knowledge, training, and best practices to accelerate innovation. Officials anticipate that the program’s outcomes will help establish long-term standards for technology deployment, ensuring that future digital infrastructure remains secure, scalable, and aligned with public service objectives. – By Content Syndication Services.
